Thanks for the thoughts on blogging, Steve. I've copied them and will distribute them to our group for contemplation. As I mentioned earlier, we are not luddites and I think it's useful to consider things we haven't before. I watch Lizzie's son, my grandson Harris, sitting at their Mac, his little six year old fingers flying over the keyboard as he plays a penguin game or looks up lego toys he wants to have. Classrooms are filling with kids who have grown up like that and we can't pretend otherwise. So while we may not want to teach on-line, we have to acknowledge the writing/publishing opportunities on-line.
This particular spring, however, my life is crowded with low-tech agendas. A big one is helping Annie get ready for her 3000k cycle to Mexico with Agents of Change. They leave on Thursday and our house is messy with biking gear, travelling foods, lists. A company called Storm Tech provided each rider (there are 22) with $600. worth of jackets, shirts, vests, rain pants, etc, and Annie has been gathering dented cans and boxes of food from the Gibsons IGA - up to almost 1000. worth of food now. Some local energy bar manufacturer is also contributing. She's good at getting sponsorship. I think people find it hard to resist her enthusiasm and idealism.
Meantime, I'm preparing for another read of my play Casting the Angel, with a group of actors from Vancouver who have generously agreed to come over for the day to work with me and a great actress/friend, Nicola Cavendish, who has offered to help me further develop the script. Such a large-hearted human being she is. I haven't had any luck finding a producer, but I want to take the script further in hopes of refining it to the point where it's as irresistible as Annie's enthusiasm. With classes over, even though schoolwork (admin-type stuff) isn't, I'm also spending a lot more time researching the new play, for the College Theatre Department. The great news last week was that an anonymous donor has agreed to fund the project, including original music for the play and an art exhibit! I love researching on the web, the connections it is possible to make. I read about a play involving people with intellectual disabilities, created by a company in Australia. I wrote to ask where I could find the script and they sent it to me!
Finally, the dear old Canucks, who have made it into the second round of the playoffs. I've been watching all season, and in the present series, with Anaheim, they're having to play their hearts out, which they did on Friday, for a win. Game 3 tonight. The Anaheim gm is our former gm, and our gm was his protege, so there's some juicy subtext here. Anaheim has big fast players, and we have a solid, sometimes unpredictable, team - not as flashy as some, but well forged as a team. Injuries are piling up, which means depth and character is being tested. We're hoping our Canucks make it to Round 3, in which case I could be looking for a sports bar in NY!
Great picture, by the way. A sort of modern "The Scream"?
