Thanks for the belated birthday wishes, Steve. I can remember Nathan's birth better than my 24th birthday that year. David's always been a big birthday celebrator, has thrown a couple of parties for me. Having got to know him a little, you'll appreciate that he's that rare person who finds most of life enjoyable in some way. I knew his mother, and he's very much like her. He's coming back today and we're going to celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving with Lizzie and her family and some other friends, including the woman artist friend whose work I'd like you to see, if she ever sends me pictures of it. On the phone, David keeps saying, "I'll tell you about it when I see you", so I still haven't heard too many of the NY stories, but I know that he basically had a blast. So glad you two met. I hope the four of us can sit down and talk someday.
Sorry that San Fran wasn't all you hoped. I fantasized visiting you and Ruth there at some point. But sometimes it just takes going away to appreciate the place you're at. At least the weather should be better now, and you live in a stimulating environment. I wonder how you feel about work, etc, now that you've been back for awhile.
With fall comes hockey season, and all we Canucks fans are anxious to see how the new team will fare. It's hardly the same team - all new coaching staff, Bertuzzi and Jovanoski, Auld and others traded - but we have retained the brightest stars, including my favourite, the captain, Markus Naslund, who is now playing on a line with the Sedin twins, a pair of tall, red headed hockey geniuses. I think that Naslund and the Sedins all got their start in the same league in Sweden, but the Sedins may be as much as ten years younger than the captain. Good start to the year. A big win over Detroit and an impressive win over Columbus. Now that I have the Mac I can tune into the Canucks Outsider. I have all my files transferred now and am just about ready to put the PC in the closet. I know I haven't begun to explore the Mac's possibilites, despite your helpful advice. But I can use it now for basic work and will fool around in down times, though there won't be many of those for the next several weeks.
I'm back at school, teaching classes in playwriting, personal narrative and fiction writing. The different genres attract, mostly, different students and the vibe is different in each class. Playwriting is most fun, personal narrative most sensitive, because, of course, students are writing stories from their own lives. I still feel priveleged to read some of their work. For the most part, it's in that class that beginning writers seem to find their authentic voices soonest. I've promised myself only two more years of teaching at the College, which means that this is my fourth last semester. Plans already forming for after that. A view of life that will include some work for others, probably, as an editor --- something I've done for free and for pay all along. Maybe some travel, depending on how much I can earn from small jobs. Annie will probably provide the incentive and destination. She had such a great time working at that camp in Spain this summer that she wants to do an exchange there next year, hopefully in Seville. I'd love to go to Spain. Would try to arrange a house swap as I did when I visited NY a few years ago (before I knew you were there). And of course, I'll have all the time I want to continue my own work. The semester beginning put a stop to the progress I was making on the new project. I'm using weekends to think about marketing. I know, I know. I should be considering the internet, and I am considering it. But I'm also sending out copies of the play, because I want to see it produced somewhere.
What's up with you?
